Short Summary (English)

Otto Scheidel has been captain of "Jenissei", a steamer on the Elbe, for more than twenty years. This is the last steamer of its kind - and now it, too, is to be done away with. It may only be used as a floating restaurant. Otto Scheidel is very attached to "his" ship. That's why he used to have rows with his girlfriend Carola, nicknamed "Caramba", and why she eventually split up with him...

Although he is offered another ship, he turns it down and joins a workers' brigade of railway constructors. When several barges get stuck at low tide, Otto captures "his" boat, which has in the meantime been turned into a restaurant managed by - of all people - Caramba. Otto wants to tug free the bogged down barges with "Jenissei".The warning call of "fire below deck" has the customers fleeing the restaurant and scrambling off the ship. Yet the whole manoeuvre misfires and the ship literally goes on the rocks. Otto and "Caramba" start quarrelling and hitting each other. But when "Caramba" realizes how dangerous such an operation is - getting the barges a float again - she grasps for the first time what this particular work, and the ships, mean to the men. The restaurant may have been destroyed, but a renewed close relationship between Otto and "Caramba" seems to be in the offing...

Short Summary (German)

Kapitän Otto Scheidel führt seit über zwanzig Jahren den Elbdampfer "Jenissei". Es ist der letzte Raddampfer, dessen Stündlein nun auch geschlagen hat. Er soll fortan fest verankert als Restaurantschiff dienen. Otto hat, weil er den Dampfer nicht aufgeben wollte, schon vorher seine langjährige Freundin Carola, genannt Caramba, verloren. Jetzt will er kein anderes Schiff und geht in eine Gleisbaubrigade. Als bei Niedrigwasser der Elbe einige Kähne festsitzen, kapert Otto das Restaurantschiff, dessen Leiterin Caramba geworden ist, um die Kähne freizuschleppen. Mit dem Ruf "Feuer unter Deck" werden die Gäste von Bord gejagt. Während des waghalsigen Manövers geht die "Jenissei" zu Bruch. Zwischen Caramba und Otto kommt es zu handgreiflichen Auseinandersetzungen. Doch beim gefährlichen Einsatz der Männer begreift Caramba, was ihnen die Arbeit und die Schiffe bedeuten. Auch wenn ihr Restaurant nur noch Schrott ist, scheint ein Happy End in greifbarer Nähe.

Short Summary (Other Languages)

Da oltre vent'anni il capitano Otto Scheidel regge il timone della "Jenissei", l'ultimo piroscafo a ruote destinato ora a diventare un ristorante galleggiante. Proprio come in passato, pur di non abbandonare la nave, Otto aveva rotto con la fidanzata Carola, detta Caramba, così oggi, pur di non condurre un'altra nave, il capitano decide di cambiare mestiere e darsi alla posa dei binari. Quando, per colpa dell'acqua bassa, alcune chiatte rimangono incagliate nel fiume Elba, Otto depreda la nave ristorante, gestito da Caramba, caccia gli ospiti dall'imbarcazione e tenta di aiutare le altre navi. Una manovra spericolata fa affondare il piroscafo. Caramba, dapprima infuriata, capisce l'importanza di quell'imbarcazione per Otto. Nonostante il ristorante sia un cumulo di macerie, il lieto fine sembra essere dietro l'angolo. (Italienisch)
