Short Summary (English)

Using the pseudonym Peter Michailow, the Tsar of Russia, worked as a carpenter in the shipyard of Saardam - a small Dutch village. The Tsar, Peter I, took on this job in order to learn the fundamentals of ship construction.The pretentious but actually rather simple-minded mayor of Saardam, Van Bett, mistakenly takes Peter Iwanow - who is not only the same age as the Tsar, but who is his workmate and compatriot as well - for the "Tsar of all Russians". This case of mistaken identity is a welcome bit of confusion because Peter I, the real Tsar, lives in constant fear that his true identity may become known.

The mayor now hopes to make a good deal with an English ambassador who also believes that Peter Iwanow is the Tsar of Russia. The French ambassador, however, proves to be somewhat more astute than his English counterpart - with the help of Marie, he manages to track down the real T sar. Marie is in love with both Peters - however, if need be, she would opt for the light -hearted Peter Iwanow.

The hapless mayor, true to form, only adds to the confused state of affairs: he composes a cantata which, while paying homage to the Tsar of Russia, is addressed to Peter Iwanow - the bogus Tsar. Meanwhile, the French ambassador finalizes an important contract with Peter I.

And despite the fact that the mayor loses out on the money that he was expecting to make from his business deal, he nevertheless receives public acclaim as atonal artist. A letter from Peter Michailow, the real Tsar, resolves the state of confusion, and Marie finally marries Peter Iwanow.

Short Summary (German)

Lortzings Oper führt ins holländische Saardam, wo sich Peter I. inkognito aufhält, um die Kunst des Schiffsbaus zu erlernen. Auf der Werft allerdings arbeiten zwei Russen namens Peter, und die den Zaren suchenden Abgesandten aus England und Frankreich haben Mühe, den richtigen zu finden. Auch Marie, der beide den Hof machen, kennt ihn nicht. Der Zar, der auf Anraten seines Vertrauten Lefort die Heimreise vorbereitet, verbündet sich mit seinem Namensvetter. So regelt er geschickt die politischen wie die persönlichen Angelegenheiten. Zar Peter verabschiedet sich, und der Zimmermann Peter bekommt seine Marie. Zurück bleibt Saardams aufgeplusterter Bürgermeister van Bett, der extra für den Zaren einen Choral verfasst hatte.

L'opera buffa di Albert Lortzing è ambientata nella cittadina olandese di Saardam, dove lo Zar Pietro I si nasconde in incognito per imparare l'arte della costruzione navale. Con lui sul cantiere lavora un altro Pietro e i due inviati dall'Inghilterra e dalla Francia hanno difficoltà a individuare chi dei due sia lo Zar. Quest'ultimo, che sta pianificando il suo rientro in patria, si allea con il suo omonimo, che risolve per lui le questioni politiche e private. Mentre lo Zar Pietro si congeda, il carpentiere conquista la sua Marie. (Italienisch)

Opéra filmé en 1956 et refilmé en 1976 d'après l'opéra commique d'Albert Lortzing. " Dans une petite ville hollandaise, deux charpentiers russes travaillent dans les chantiers navals. Tous deux s'appellent Pierre et sont épris de Marie, la nièce du maire. L'histoire repose sur le fait que l'un des deux Pierre est le tsar de Russie, Pierre le Grand, venu travailler en Hollande incognito et qu'il est recherché par les ambassadeurs de trois pays.
