Die Ehe von Katrin und Richard Lot ist zur Routine geworden. Sie hat einen Beruf, der sie ausfüllt, er kommt als Marine-Offizier nur alle 14 Tage nach Hause. Die Kinder begrüßen ihn freudig, Katrin mit Unbehagen, denn ihrer Ehe fehlt das Entscheidende: Liebe. Sie will die Scheidung. Er lehnt ab, vorwiegend aus Bequemlichkeit und wegen der zu erwartenden Vorhaltungen in seiner Parteigruppe. Katrin greift zu einem ungewöhnlichen Mittel. Sie stiehlt in einem Kaufhaus, wird zu drei Monaten auf Bewährung verurteilt. Nun reicht er die Scheidung ein wegen "moralischer Labilität" seiner Frau. Katrin hat ihren Willen durchgesetzt, sie bekommt sogar die Kinder zugesprochen. Zwar ist sie als Lehrerin mit ihrer Verurteilung wegen Diebstahls nicht mehr "tragbar", aber sie ist frei und muss nicht länger mit einer Lüge leben.

To sport teacher and trainer Katrin Lot, mother of two children and married to an officer of the People's Marine, her husband's weekend visits are an ordeal. The married couple has become indifferent to each other. Hyprocrisy and lies - especially in front of the children, who, however; are overjoyed at their father's visits - have destroyed any semblance of a genuine relationship. For this reason, Karin now wants a divorce.

But her husband rejects this idea - particularly for fear of having to justify himself in his Party group and out of a certain laziness; but also because he loves his children. After consulting a lawyer; Katrin sees only one chance of getting a divorce - by committing a punishable offence. She steals a piece of clothing from a department store, seeing to it that she gets caught. Subsequently, she is given a suspended sentence of three months.

Fearing he might lose both his function and respectability, Richard Lot now files for divorce. He wants to keep his children but the divorce court awards custody to their mother. At last Katrin is free, at a high price, however she has lost her professional functions. But from now on, she can live without any lies or hypocrisy.

Il matrimonio di Katrin e Richard Lot si è tramutato in routine. Lei hai un lavoro che la appaga e lui, ufficiale della marina, torna a casa ogni due settimane. Mentre i figli lo salutano cordialmente, Katrin si sente a disagio, perché capisce che il loro matrimonio non si basa più sull'amore. Vorrebbe il divorzio, ma il marito glielo rifiuta, un po' per abitudine, un po' per paura delle rimostranze del suo partito. Allora Katrin decide di commettere un furto, per il quale la condannano a tre mesi con la condizionale.
